Military Academy Nominations
The U.S. Service Academies are among the most highly respected, quality educational programs in the nation. As a member of Congress, Congressman Fong has the honor of nominating up to ten individuals to four of the five U.S. Service Academies: the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCGA), does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.
To receive a nomination to a U.S. service academy, you must be a legal resident of California’s 20th Congressional District.
Please review the U.S. Service Academy Guidelines and Nomination Process thoroughly before submitting your application. You may also refer to our Frequently Asked Questions page for more information on the nomination process. Applications must include the following to be considered by our office:
- A completed Application for Nomination
- Three to Five Letters of Recommendation from non-relatives
- SAT/ACT scores: Test results for one or both can be sent directly to Congressman Vince Fong from the testing service. Copies of official scores will also be accepted.
- High School and/or College Transcripts
- A recent 4x6 or 5x7 photo
Failure to provide all the information above will result in application not being considered.

Service Academy Forums:
In the fall of each year, Congressman Fong will host an “Academy Forum” to introduce students and parents to the nomination and appointment process. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to presentations and speak with local liaison officers about the process of applying for a U.S. Military Academy and receiving a Congressional nomination. Students as young as 7th grade are encouraged to attend these forums to allow for the early preparation that is required to be a competitive applicant for an academy nomination.
